Guillermo del Toro's 'Pan's Labyrinth' - Film Review

Pan's Labyrinth (El laberinto del fauno)

Language - Spanish

Genre - Drama, Fantasy, War
**ing -
Ivana Baquero, Ariadna Gil and Sergi López
Release - 2006

Pan's Labyrinth plays out as a contradiction that denies itself. An adult fairy tale set during the last days of Spanish Civil War, it has the brute and violent tinge of reality, coupled with a surreal charm that only a visionary master such as Guillermo del Toro can accomplish.
Pan's Labyrinth won countless awards, most notably earning 6 Oscar nominations, eventually winning 3 including Best Art Direction, Best Makeup and Best Cinematography. In also won a Best Foreign Film BAFTA and a Palme d'Or nomination at the Cannes.

The young Ofelia (Ivana Baquero), fascinated with fairy tales, has to move with her pregnant mother Carmen (Gil) to a military outpost in the woods, commanded by her sadistic step-father Captain Vidal (Sergi López) who fighting for the fascists under general Franco. Bed-ridden with sickness, Carmen spends her time listening to fairy-tales narrated by Ofelia. But Ofelia soon finds herself in one as she follows a stick-insect shaped fairy to a labyrinth where she meets the faun (Doug Jones) who believes her to be Princess Moanna. The opening sequence shows a princess, Moanna, as the daughter of the King of the underworld, who ventures to the surface, only to be blinded by the sunlight and losing her memory, and eventually her death.

The faun proposes three tasks to Ofelia to be completed before full moon, to ensure that Princess Moanna's soul remains intact and she can return to the magical realm of the underworld. For those fascinated by the mythical creations envisioned by Del Toro in the Hellboy films, consider yourself in for a treat. Be warned though that it's strictly meant for adults as the fairy tale plays out like the dark and violent original works by the Grimm brothers. Doug Jones is fascinating and intriguing as Pan, the faun who'll keep you guessing and wondering as to his true-motives.

Outside, in the real world, Captain Vidal indulges himself in torture and other atrocities against the suspected or captured rebels, and also on one of his doctors who euthanized a badly injured prisoner. Del Toro doesn't shy away from portraying the horrors of these acts in graphic details. In Captain Vidal, we see a monster more horrific than any in the fairy tale within Pan's Labyrinth. The two worlds intertwine as Pan, the faun, gives Ofelia a second chance to finish her final task. Pan's Labyrinth presents a stark reminder that fantasy can never escape the horrors of reality, but it does imbibe hope and ambition to strive for a better one. Pan's Labyrinth is a mesmerizing concoction of fantasy, folk-lore, history, struggle between the good and evil, and captures the universal themes of love, courage and sacrifice.

Kurosawa's Epic Masterpiece 'Ran' ( 乱 ) - Review

Ran ( 乱 )

Language - Japanese

Genre - Drama, Action, War
**ing -
Tatsuya Nakadai, Akira Terao and Jinpachi Nezu
Release - 1985

At the time of it's release, Akira Kurosawa's Ran (乱) was the most expensive movie in the history of Japan. Never before had Japan seen a spectacle as grand as Kurosawa's epic adaptation of 'King Lear'. As I witnessed this epic recently at a special screening, I realized once again why the auteur was regarded as one of the greatest cinematic genius. Such is the mastery of Kurosawa that despite the grandiose and scale of Ran, every character leaves a indelible mark with their emotions, intents, desires, fears and their 'madness' perfectly etched out.

Ran (乱) sees Kurosawa partner with Tatsuya Nakadai once again, his favourite leading man since the fallout with the great Toshiro Mifune. Tatsuya Nakadai plays the 70 years-old Lord Hidetora Ichimonji (inspired by King Lear) who decides to abdicate his throne and pass on the main authority to his eldest Son Taro, and with each son getting a castle. But the youngest and the Lord's favourite son Saburo isn't pleased with his father's decision. He considers it to be made in haste and pleads him to continue being the Lord in command. The open displeasure leads him to being banished by the Lord. Though it's a serene start, it sets the tone with the introduction of the main characters and the bright and vivid colors that Kurosawa uses skillfully to enhance the appeal of the settings.

Saburo's warnings come true as his elder sons Tao and Jiro conspire against him to destroy the remnants of power still held by Hidetora. Within the opening hour, we witness the first war sequence in the form of an attack on the castle where Hidetora has sought residence. The sequence is mesmerizing with it's detailed chaos. The horse-mounted Samurai cavalry ride with aggression and purpose, and the foot soldiers seem equally purposeful. Though the extras only numbered in a few hundreds, Kurosawa's direction creates the illusion of thousands, and an intensity not often seen on the celluloid. One just can't deny the masterful eye for details reflected in this beautifully crafted sequence. In the midst of the chaos emerges Lady Kaede (Mieko Harada), Taro's wife who later becomes Jiro's mistress. Driven by the single purpose to destroy the Ichimonji clan responsible for the death of her family, Harada evokes a sense of dread with her ghostly appearance, eerily menacing demeanor and abrupt ferocity.

The betrayal by his own sons drives Hidetora to madness and the movie becomes increasing introspective and grim. Accompanied by a loyal advisor and a court jester Kyoami, directly inspired from 'fool', a character from Shakespeare's Lear, they seek refuge in an abandoned castle of a rival clan that was burnt down at Hidetora's command. Anachronistic as Kyoami's character may seem to anyone vaguely familiar with the Japanese culture during the reign of Samurais, he manages to evoke credibility (but it's open for debate!).

Toru Takemitsu's brilliant music adds to the horror of desolation faced by the trio, as it did for the ambiance-muted war sequence.

Tatsuya Nakadai's trans-formative performance, from a strong-willed and aggressive Lord to a mad-man, is sheer brilliance. By the time it comes to the final battle sequence, equally detailed and masterful as the first one, Kurosawa's brilliance convinces us of the insanity that partakes in all of us as we struggle and labor to fight and destroy each other, and ourselves. In it's 162 mins of running length, there's not a wasted moment. Every character and detail exists for a purpose. Ran (乱) is a Kurosawa masterpiece and deserves it's standing as one of the best in the world of cinema.

Movie Review of 'Love and Honor' (Japan 2007)

Love and Honor (Bushi no ichibun)

Language - Japanese
Genre - Drama, Action, Romance
**ing -
Takuya Kimura, Rei Dan and Mitsugoro Bando
Release - 2004

Love and Honor (Bushi no ichibun) is the final act of Yoji Yamada's acclaimed Samurai trilogy, with the previous films being the Oscar nominated The Twilight Samurai and the equally brilliant The Hidden Blade. As with the previous two films, Love and Honor is also an adaptation from a short story by Shuhei Fujisawa and similarly portrays the trials and tribulations of a simple samurai and his family, and the ingrained Samurai code. Also similar to it's predecessors, it greatly impressed the Japanese Academy winning 13 nominations including best Film. But it only managed to win 3 awards.

Set in the EDO period, it's the story of Shinojo (Takuya Kimura), a bashful mid-level Samurai who leads a comfortable life with his beautiful and dutiful wife Kayo (Rei Dan) and a loyal old servant who's all too happy to be the butt of Shinojo's jokes. Shinojo despises his position as a food-taster for the 'lord' (to ensure that it's not poisoned) and dreams of starting a Kendo dojo where everyone would be taught based on their abilities, just like 'kimonos fit different people differently'. His dreams are shattered when he ends up food-tasting a toxic preperation, that causes him to go blind.

Though the movie starts in a lighter vein, it quickly transcends into a darker and more introspective film with the tragedy. Takuya Kimura and Rei Dan seem capable with their performance through these emotional scenes that capture the anger and frustration of Shinojo, and the resolute love and support of Kayo. For the first half, Love and Honor is really a drama about personal tragedy. The circumstances leads to a moral dilemma with Kayo compromising on her virtues, in hopes of ensuring livelihood for her husband.

Though unforgiving on his wife, Shinojo gradually realizes the injustice done to Kayo and seeks to avenge her honor. Though the 'Samurai' genre is filled with the 'blind samurai' cliches, Yoji Yamda brilliantly captures the pain and anguish, as well as the Samurai code that endures despite physical handicaps. Keeping in tradition with the previous films, Love and Honor (Bushi no ichibun) also culminates with a sense of happiness, a feeling shared by me for these brilliantly crafted Samurai tales by Yoji Yamada which deserve their place among the best that the modern Samurai films have to offer.

[Review] DRIVE (2011)

Director Nicolas Winding Refn Writers Hossein Amini
Cast Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Albert Brooks, Bryan Cranston
Distributor Film District Genre Action, Crime, Drama, Thriller

Just as important as its other technical atmosphere, scoring film yang dikerjaan oleh Cliff Martinez, orang yang juga bekerja di film Contagion, sangatlah impresif.

Saat itu satu hal yang muncul di pikiran saya, this Driver is one of the greatest avenger all the time.

Bukannya berlebihan, tapi the way he look through his eyes is really mesmerizing. No doubt this dude is one of the finest actor today. His consistency is remarkable, as is his range and taste of roles.

Beberapa artikel mempersalahkan adanya lack of characterization of Driver yang tidak menceritakan background kehidupannya.

Movie Review of The Hidden Blade (Japan 2004)

Genre - Drama, Action
**ing - Masatoshi Nagase, Takako Matsu and Hidetaka Yoshioka
Release - 2004

A few weeks ago I reviewed the Oscar nominated The Twilight Samurai, the first installment of Yoji Yamada's acclaimed Samurai Trilogy. Nearly as brilliant, The Hidden Blade bears a strong resemblance to it's predecessor that is not merely limited to the similar art-house production values and style and authentic portrayal of a simple Samurai's life, but also in it's plot elements. The movie received an impressive 12 Japanese Academy Awards nominations, but unfortunately only won for it's superb art-direction. It was also nominated for a Golden Berlin Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival. The Hidden Blade stars Masatoshi Nagase as Munezo Katagiri, a lowly 50 koku Samurai with a simple existence but a strong belief and respect for the Samurai code. Set in 1860s, the backdrop presents a shifting preference towards western arms and ammunition as part of military tactics, from the more traditional Sword and arrows based Samurai warfare. Yamada portrays the transformation with great authenticity and it also provides some of the film's rare humor as the proud samurai struggle to learn the basics of western rifles and canons. One of the funniest moments is when a Edo based instructor challenges a Samurai to race to prove the superiority of western running style with raised knees and arm movements, as opposed to 'squatty' running style of the Samurais.

This was also a period of treachery and secret mutiny's against the lords and the Shogunate as Japan approach the era of Meiji restoration. Katagiri finds himself in a moral dilemma when he's ordered by the clan to kill a old friend who was accused of rebellion and treachery. But the soul of the film is Katagiri's subdued love interest for his beautiful and noble maid kei (Takako Matsu), whom he rescues from her abusive husband and in-laws. But his Samurai code prevents him from proposing marriage to a member of a different class, as such an event was frowned upon by the Japanese culture of stringent class system. Takako Matsu is brilliant as the noble Kei; especially if you have seen her contrasting performance as a cold and calculated avenger of her young child's murder in 2010 Oscar nominated Confessions (Kokuhaku).

Yoji Yamada yet again succeeds in creating a authentic and demystifying portrayal of a Samurai. Though the story-line maintains a slightly more cheerful tone (or less depressive depending on one's perspective) compared to The Twilight Samurai, it's characters are equally captivating and affect a moving story. And much like Twilight Samurai, Katagiri finds his redemption with his skills with the blade and his code of honor. Though the final moments of the film could be called a fairy-tale ending, it doesn't feel forced and maintains the credibility and realism as with the rest of the movie.

The Hidden blade succeeds as another Yoji Yamada Samurai classic that is tranquil yet moving, and captivates with exciting moments, great direction and performances.

Review of "Habemus Papam" (We have a Pope) - 2011

Language - Italian
Genre - Drama, Comedy
Release - 2010

Habemus Papam (We have a Pope) was one of the most talked about movies at the 2011 Cannes Film festival. Critics called it bold, controversial, challenging, incendiary and also smart, among other things. There's no doubt about the efficacy of such publictiy in evoking public's interest in a motion picture. But as I sat through this delightfully comical film with a touch of satire, from one of the most respected names in Italian Cinema Nanni Moretti, I was left perplexed if I was watching the same film.

Or maybe it's because I don't adequately comprehend the religious sensibilities of the general public as envisioned by these popular and esteemed critics. After all, is it really controversial to show a pope getting stage-fright after getting elected or seeing the ageing bishops and cardinals, who are members of the conclave, indulging in normal human activities such as playing a game of volleyball or having the inquisiteness of knowing what their respective odds were of being elected, as published by the bookmakers in England before the election. Michel Piccoli stars as cardinal Melville, the pope-elect (much to his surprise), and starts having performance anxeity moments before stepping out on the balcony to address a huge gathering of faithfuls. But the Vatican needs him to overcome his apprehensions and announce his appointment as the most powerful religious figure in the world, to the public at large.

Realizing that the problems is more of the mind than anything physical, the vatican decides to invite a leading psycho-analyst (played by Nanni Moretti) for examining the pope. But he's rather helpless as the Pope cannot divulge details of his dreams, childhood issues or his sexual fantasies. Nanni Moretti seems natural as a professional who also happens to be a non-believer and hence doesn't seem to share the overwhelming reverence that the faithfuls have for the great cardinals and Bishops, and the Pope himself. In many ways, Nanni Moretti wants to have the public share the same outlook about the sacred Vatican traditions and it's revered members, as his psychoanalyst character has (and probably his own 'real' self).

But the burden of Habemus Papam really rests on the veteran actor Micel Piccoli. Unfortunately, his performance is largely limited to moments of contemplation, panic attacks or shell-shocked expressions. Despite the screen time, his character continues to remain a mystery and Moretti fails to provide a insightful first person perspective into the insecurities, anxieties or the aspirations of the newly-elected Pope. At the end though, despite the bold and somewhat shocking finale, this is really a charming and harmless comedy that dares to portray the Pope as a vulnerable human being. Habemus Papam treads a little too cautiously so as not to offend, or infringe on the sanctity of the Catholic church and the Pope, making it fall desperately short of being truly acknowledged as a path-breaking film.

Film Review of 'About Elly' (2009)

Language - Persian
Genre - Drama, Mystery
**ing - Golshifteh Farahani, Shahab Hosseini and Taraneh Alidoosti

Release - 2009

Director and Screenwriter Ashgar Farhadi is arguably the most recognized film-maker from Iran. He is known for his ability to push the limits of stringent censorship faced by Iranian film-makers. His latest film A Separation won the Golden Bear Award at the 2011 Berlinale Film Festival, the first Iranian film to have achieved the feat. In 2009, he won the Silver Bear Award for the  brilliant  About Elly (Darbareye Elly). The film was also voted as the 4th greatest Iranian movie ever by the National Society of Iranian Critics.

About Elly is a poignant human drama about the friendship and relationships between middle-class families in Iran as they try to deal with a shocking tragedy. Though it runs long at 120 mins, it nonetheless manages to captivate your attention throughout with it's great story-telling and performances. The movie revolves around a weekend getaway of a close circle of families. But the main organizer of the trip Sepideh (Golshifteh Farahani) has an added agenda. She plans to use the outing as an effort of matchmaking between Ahmad (Shahab Hosseini), a recently divorced friend who is visiting from Germany, and Elly (Taraneh Alidousti), the pretty young kindergarten teacher of Sepideh's daughter. A plan which everyone seems to be in the know-how of, with the exception of Elly.

Most of About Elly is set in a unkempt villa by the Caspian sea; a last minute compromise by the group as other accommodations are unavailable due to the weekend rush. The early moments are about making the villa hospitable for their planned 3 day stay, but their favorite shenanigan is teasing Ahmad about Elly and making attempts to have the intended couple spend some time together. Suspicious of their intents, Elly seems increasingly awkward and shy. For many of the international audiences, the opening act should lay to rest the general preconceptions about the Iranian society, and in particular about the role of women and the restrictions imposed on them. The women are empowered, especially Sepideh, who's treated as the matriarch of the group. Though some social customs are observed, such as wearing of the veil, it's more of traditional dressing than a restriction. They speak freely and express their opinions, and have their votes considered when deciding for the group as a whole.

But the fun-filled drama of family and friends quickly morphs into something darker when one of the children, Arash, nearly drowns in the Caspian Sea. As soon as they get a sense of relief at Arash's well-being, they are hit by the realization that the their 'guest of honor', Elly, has gone missing. Has she drowned while trying to save Arash or did she simply leave ? Ashgar Farhadi brilliantly captures the group psychology of a social system when confronted with something undesirable. There are confessions of innocuous remarks that might have upset Elly forcing her to leave, or how to convey the news to her family if she has indeed drowned. There's also a strong sense of guilt for Sepideh who planned the entire matchmaking effort and forced Elly to join them, much against her comfort. Amidst these discussions, there's a realization that hardly anything is known about Elly.

In many ways, About Elly plays more like a mystery thriller than a human drama. As secrets are revealed and lies are exposed, there are choices to be made concerning family, friendship and honor. The depth of the characters largely defined by the sincerity and realism of the performances, that are as natural as the evolving circumstances they find themselves in. This is an absolutely riveting human drama with great emotional depth and deals with universal themes that each of us can relate to, and reflect upon.

Review of "Even the Rain" (También la lluvia) - 2010

Language - Spanish
Genre - Drama, History
Release - 2010

Even the Rain (También la lluvia) is a beautifully crafted multi-layered effort that's effectively a film within a film. Directed by Icíar Bollaín, the movie revolves around the production of a film by an idealistic and passionate young film-maker Sebastien, brilliantly played by Gael Garcia Bernal (Amores Perros), who travels to Bolivia with the film's crew to direct a story about the cruelty of the great explorer Christopher Columbus towards the Native Indians. The crew is accompanied by a pragmatic and cynical producer Costa (Luis Tosar) whose primary inclination for shooting in Bolivia, and involving the native Indians, is the economics involved. The film is an interesting study of art imitating life, and life imitating art.

Even the Rain was nominated for an impressive 13 Goya awards, winning 3. It was also the Spanish Oscar submission for the 83rd Academy Awards, but couldn't make the final list of nominees in the best Foreign Film category.

As the film crew start the shoot, screenplay cleverly presents a dimension of Columbus's discovery of the new world that is often not publicized in popular literature. Through the clever usage of rehearsals and debates amongst the crew members, we are made ware of the moral arguments between the key historic players such as Columbus himself who sanctioned the enslavement and exploitation of the native Indians, and Bartolomé de las Casas and Antonio de Montesinos who were appaled by the spanish treatment of the Indians and decided to speak out against their compatriots and spent the rest of their lives helping the native Indians. Karra Elejalde is brilliant as the temperamental and drunk actor who plays Columbus. His overt cynicism masking a deep felt sense of morality.

But the soul of the movie is Daniel (Juan Carlos Aduviri), a native Indian picked by Sebastien to play the role of revolutionary leader Hatuey who lead the revolution against the Spaniards, despite producer Costa's disapproval as he felt that Daniel would only create trouble. Costa's prophecy comes true as Daniel gets involved as a social activist leading the protests against the privatization of water supply by the MNCs (based on the real life Cochabamba Water Wars). Daniel's participation in the protests and his imprisonment threatens to derail the film shoot. In a desperate attempt to the salvage the film, Costa resorts to bribing various people including a police officer to let out a tortured Daniel from the prison for just a day so that shoot of an important scene can be finished. The movie brilliantly creates a parallel between history and the present with the film-makers exploiting the Indians for their selfish pursuits and completely ignoring the struggle of the Indians to claim their right over something as fundamental as 'water from the rains'.

The brilliant direction and screenplay, along with some great camera-work makes the film affect skillful transformations between the historical fantasy and the harsh realities of the present day.

Much of Even the Rain's charm emanates from it's mature, realistic and non-preachy portrayal of the important events and the brilliant performances adds depth to the sincerity of the characters.

[Review] GONE BABY GONE (2007)

Director Ben Affleck Cast Casey Affleck, Michelle Monaghan, Amy Ryan
Distributor Miramax Films Genre Drama, Crime

Well, berlebihan nggak sih? Menurut saya iya. Robert DeNiro sampai Julie Roberts nggak jarang kok main jelek, tapi ya gitu, orang terlalu ngeliat predikat mereka sebagai kaliber Oscar sehingga apa-apa pasti dibilang bagus.

Oscar? Jangan remehin Ben Affleck dulu, tahun 1998 lalu dia dapet Oscar berkat hasil kerjanya sebagai writer Good Will Hunting, walaupun shared with Matt Damon. Terus terang film itu belum saya tonton, jadi nggak bisa menilai terlalu gimana gitu. Well, nggak mungkin kan orang dapet Oscar tapi sebenernya dia nggak bagus?

In the other hand, Daredevil-nya Affleck emang saya akui sampah, sampe mikir kok kayaknya kebanyakan adaptasi komik DC selalu gagal ya? Lucunya, Affleck punya istri, Garner, juga pernah meranin superhero sampah yaitu Elektra.

Oops, hampir lupa ngomongin filmnya. Nyadar nggak sih Boston sering banget dijadikan latar tempat buat film-film jenis crime?

Let me tell the term, evil is "black", whereas good is "white". Coba ambil media pewarna, campur hitam sama putih. Hasilnya nggak bakal jadi putih kan? Sebanyak-banyaknya warna putih yang dicampur, tetep aja warnanya bernuansa dark. So, kejahatan sama kebaikan tuh nggak bisa dicampur. Nggak usah berusaha memperlogis argumen, tetep, buat saya jahat ya jahat.
